The Pine Burr Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will recognize Lawrence
Warren as the recipient of the 2001 Distinguished Citizen Award Sept.
13 at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual by
the area council of Boy Scouts.
"Lawrence Warren is a person who has put in a lot of time and effort
into the community, and most of all into the youth of the community,"
said Brad Brian, one of the chairperson of the steering committee who
selected the recipient of this award. "He is committed to leaving
Hattiesburg a better place for his children and grandchildren."
Warren is president and CEO of Warren Paving Inc. of Hattiesburg and
Gulfport. His father, Charles Warren, started the business in 1952 and
by 1961 Lawrence Warren became involved.
"This is a very flattering award for me," said Warren.
Warren is an instrumental part of the community. He is involved in The
Salvation Army, The Pearl River Valley Electric Association, and the
Advisory Board for Trustmark National Bank.
Through their involvement in the community, Warren and his wife, Bonnie,
have helped many organizations.
Warren is serving his second year as chairman of the Area Development
Partnership.
During his tenure, he has participated in the ADP's successful efforts
of attracting several major industries to the greater Hattiesburg area
that have made major investments in the community.
"Working with the ADP has been wonderful. It has helped open so
many doors," said Warren.
"The group that I have a special love for is the Pine Belt Boys
and Girls Club.
This is my second year to serve as president of the board of directors
and it is a love of involvement that keeps me here," he noted.
Warren remembers when the Boys and Girls Club in this area was struggling.
He was a vital part in organizing the first Steak and Burger Dinner,
which has become the primary fund-raising source for the club. The fund-raiser
has helped raise $250,000 for the local club.
